Howard High School is a testament to what the community
can accomplish when it comes together to support a
cause.  In less than one year after construction began,
Howard High School will open on August 7, with students
actively learning and engaging in sports and in an
environment with all the resources necessary to succeed.
Karen Yarbrough, principal of Howard High School, is
thankful for the community’s support.  She said, “We are
very thankful to all of our business sponsors.  All the added
extras would not have been possible without their support.
These sponsors include Coca-Cola, Parrish Construction,
Capital City Bank, Rosson Sign Company, Talbots, Inc.,
OrthoGeorgia, IKON, and Dunwody Beeland Architects, Inc.”

It wasn’t long ago, February 2007, that the Board of
Education approved the construction of the $27.7 million
Howard High School, a 164,000 square foot facility.  Then,
on August 28, 2007, the Board of Education hosted a
groundbreaking celebration.  Less than one year later, the
classrooms of North Macon’s newest high school soon
will be filled with teachers and students.  While the capacity
for Howard High School is 1,000 students, approximately
650 students are projected to enroll during the 2008 –
2009 school year.  In addition, while the school plans to
educate students in grades 9 – 12, during this first school-
year, only grades 9 – 11 will be enrolled.  A senior class
will be added during the 2009 – 2010 school year.  Howard’
s feeder schools include Springdale, Carter, Lane, the
north end of the Brookdale school zone, the north end of
the Rosa Taylor school zone, and Howard Middle School.
Yarbrough said, “I am very excited about being the principal
of Howard High.  I have been the principal of three of the
feeder schools.  I know the children and parents; I have
watched the children grow up, and I look forward to seeing
some of them all the way through to graduation.”

Howard High School is equipped with 21st century
technology.  Computers are in every classroom, and both
teachers and students have access to all the modern
technology available for teaching and learning.  This
technology includes digital projectors with ceiling mounted
screens, wireless carts with laptops, digital cameras and
camcorders, and flatbed scanners.  Educational software
and instructional material also is available, along with
teaching labs.

As well as the technological support to aid learning,
Howard High School offers a dynamic array of courses
designed for students traveling both traditional and
non-traditional paths.  Howard High School offers gifted
and advanced placement courses.  It also offers
vocational courses in its state-of-the-art vocational wing.
This wing includes a marketing lab and a graphic
communications and design lab; Howard High School is
the first high school in Bibb County to house a graphic
communications and design lab.  Students also will have
the opportunity to take technology and business courses.
Fine arts education, including band, chorus, orchestra,
and visual arts is available to students.  Athletics include
football, fast-pitch softball, basketball, wrestling, track,
cross-country running, soccer, baseball, golf, tennis,
swimming, and cheerleading.

The new Georgia Department of Education graduation
requirements will be implemented with first-time ninth-
graders.  The new guidelines require students to
complete new course requirements.  The goal of the
program is to prepare students for post-secondary
options.  Requirements include completing four units of
English, four units of Math, four units of science, four units
of social studies, one unit of health/physical education,
one unit of computer application, three units of computer
technology, fine arts or foreign language, and seven
elective units.

Howard’s students have an option of selecting classes
that target their desired career pathway in the fields of
Interactive Media, Small Business Development,
Education and Teaching, Nutrition and Food Science,
Graphic Communications, and Marketing and
Management.  Career pathways also offer junior and
senior-level students the opportunity to participate in the
Youth Apprenticeship Program; in this program, students
will have the opportunity to work with businesses such as
Macon Power, Boeing, and Robins Air Force Base, just to
name a few.

Howard High School students will be required to wear
uniforms. Information relating to Howard’s unified dress
code is available in the shaded box to the right.  Yarbrough
said that she looks forward to meeting all of the students
of Howard High School’s inaugural student body, and
expects them to be wearing their uniforms on the first day
of school.  The official plaid school uniform garments may
be purchased in the Howard High School Store.  However,
all other uniform clothing is readily available from local
retailers.
