In August, however, our children will return to school, and
we will return to work.  Our focus will return to learning,
planning future goals, and advancing the future of our
households, and the companies we either work for, or
own.  Given the fright that many community members have
expressed regarding the economy, we thought it
appropriate in this issue of Around Town North Macon to
focus on the positives of our local economy – our
continued and new growth.

Yes, gas prices have increased, and homeowners are
finding it harder to sell their homes.  However, Macon is
continuing to grow, and we are preparing for the future.  We
know factors such as speculation, and the election year
likely play a role in the national news that we listen to and
read.  We also know that the economic trends of our local
economy don’t exactly follow that of other national major
cities in California and Florida, for example.  Yes, we
experience ups and downs, but these ups are smaller, and
so are the downs.  Most people agree that when averaged,
we are on a path of continued growth.  This especially is
true for North Macon.  Look around at all the new growth!
We have a new mall, at least four new hotels that currently
are being built, at least two new shopping centers on their
way, several new restaurants, and multiple small locally-
owned businesses that recently have opened, or shortly
are on their way.
Okay, so what about the housing market?  According to
local professionals in the market, real estate activity is up,
but because of new lending regulations (to prevent future
foreclosures), families are finding it harder to acquire
funding for a loan.  Essentially, this means that homes are
slower to sell.  But, there is interest, activity, and
eventually, these homes do sell.

My point is this – don’t give up, and stay the course.  If you
invest, keep investing.  If you purchase from local retailers,
keep purchasing.  If you are selling a home, keep it on the
market.  And, don’t believe everything you hear on the
national news!  If you are curious, call some of our local
businesses, and ask questions.  You likely will learn
helpful information, and it might put your mind at ease.  If
we all live in fear of what might happen, then we are going
to find ourselves creating our worst fears.  I recommend
reading the book, The Number, by Alex Berenson.  The
Number discusses how American businesses got into
the DotCom mess, and why many American’s suffered.  It
also illustrates the role speculation plays both on the
corporate and consumer ends.  This book discusses the
consequence of conducting business without proper
regulations, and consumers acting based on
speculation.  One of the number-one concerns that
community members express is the impact of gas prices
– whether on their family or business.  Interestingly,
several nationally recognized analysts argue that the
current price of gas is more based on speculation than
anything else.  The price of gas will moderate as we have
experienced throughout American history.  When it does,
will you be prepared?  Those that currently are active in
our market are saying, yes, we are staying on course, and
are prepared for the positive future of our community.

In conclusion, we have had a lot of fun this summer.  Now,
it’s time to get back on course.  Let this be the month that
we move forward with a hopeful and positive outlook.
Wake up each day, and ask, “How can I make this a better
day than yesterday?  And, am I continually moving closer
to what I want (not what I speculate) my future to be?”  Be
proactive rather than reactive.

To me, and many of my
friends and colleagues,
August will be the month that
we return to our “normal”
schedules.  During the past
three months, we have
attended summer camps,
gone on family vacations,
attended (and some of us
planned) weddings,
celebrated Fourth of July, and
enjoyed the warm days of
summer with friends and
family.
